Sumreen Zahra: The First Female Bike Training Instructor in Pakistan

# Sumreen Zahra: The First Female Bike Training Instructor in Pakistan

Bike riding is not only a convenient and affordable mode of transportation, but also a way of expressing freedom, independence, and empowerment. However, in Pakistan, where women face many social and cultural barriers, bike riding is often seen as a male-dominated activity that is not suitable or safe for women. Despite these challenges, more and more women in Pakistan are breaking the stereotypes and taking to the streets on their bikes, thanks to some initiatives and role models that are encouraging and supporting them.

One of these role models is Sumreen Zahra, who claims to be the first female bike training instructor in Pakistan. She works at Shaheen Driving School, one of the top driving schools in Islamabad that offers driving courses for both men and women³. Zahra was trained by Shaheen Driving School and has professional experience in teaching female bike riding. She has trained hundreds of girls who are now riding bikes confidently.

Zahra says that she was inspired by her father, who taught her how to ride a bike when she was young. She says that she always loved bike riding and wanted to share her passion with other women. She says that she faced many difficulties and criticism from her family and society, but she never gave up on her dream. She says that she wants to empower women through bike riding and show them that they can do anything they want.

Zahra's teaching method is based on three principles: safety, confidence, and fun. She says that she first teaches her students the basic skills of bike riding, such as balancing, braking, shifting gears, turning, etc. She also makes sure that they wear proper protective gear, such as helmets, gloves, jackets, etc. She then takes them to different roads and terrains, such as highways, hills, curves, etc., to help them gain confidence and experience. She also encourages them to enjoy the ride and have fun with their bikes.

Zahra says that she has seen many positive changes in her students after they learned bike riding. She says that they have become more independent, confident, and adventurous. They have also developed a sense of camaraderie and friendship with other female bikers. She says that some of her students have even participated in bike rallies and events to raise awareness and celebrate female bikers.

Sumreen Zahra is not only a bike instructor, but also a trailblazer who is changing the perception of women's mobility and agency in Pakistan. By riding bikes, she is claiming her public space, asserting her rights, and inspiring others to do the same. Sumreen Zahra is a shining example of female bike riding in Pakistan.
